Do Not Worry It Is Safe
Everywhere I go, I love to eat from the street. That is just me. I was advised in many places that eating from the street is not safe, but in my opinion, you cannot know until you tried. So really, it is mostly up to having a hard stomach and using the WC often. Eating from Myanmar streets, I had no problem at all. In addition, if u want to be 100 % sure just check the web and decide where u want to eat in advance.
Shwe Yin Aye – Morning Dessert for Breakfast
It is a cold coconut-based dessert which usually comes with bread soaked in the coconut cream. It is very often being served with cubes of ice or even crushed ice. It is flavored with extract of pandan leaf which gives it that tropical taste. You can see the locals chilling and enjoying this meal, especially during the Water Festival. A local told me to try so I did and since then I had a tradition, while I was in Yangon to have it like breakfast. Eating it on a super-hot morning just hits different.
Mohinga -The Unofficial National Dish of Myanmar
A delicious dish usually preferred for breakfast or dinner. Mainly ingredients are glass noodles, catfish, rice, and spices like ginger, lemongrass, and others. It can be sweet or chili. The locals love to order an extra fried egg with their Mohinga. That is how I like to eat it too! My favorite place for a Mohinga is Maha Bandula Park east of Mahabandula Park in Yangon.
Shan Noodles – Love From First Side
Shan noodle is a famous dish not only in Myanmar but also in China and Thailand. But the best ones I tries are in Myanmar. It is a combination between pork and chicken cooked in tomatoes on a bed of white noodles. I can say that noodles are the most popular cooking ingredient in Myanmar cuisine and from all noodles-based dishes, which are more than you can imagine, Shan noodles take the first place in my heart.
Different Styles of Curry
Curry is a food that is ubiquitous in Myanmar. The difference in the taste between the curry in India or Thailand is that is spicier, and it is served at room temperature. Most of the curries in Myanmar do not use coconut milk which makes them taste unique and quite different from the curry in other parts of Asia. Fresh onion always goes on the top and. I like my curry sweet and extra spicy.
Mont Lin Ma Yar – The Exciting Snack
The translation of the name means husband and wife snack and I really want to think it is because supposed to be share. I love to share food with the people around me, it is just so much more fun. That is why I am a big fan of the “Tapas” kitchen. Anyway, this delicious dish can be found on the streets of Yangon. It resembles a flattened cupcake that has been fried. The main ingredients are rice flour better and add on scallion, fried egg, and chickpeas. It is a very interesting picture of how the street chefs are making them and the way they carefully apply the butter beans, oil, and water during the frying process using those giants hot frying pans.
Different Drinks that You Must Try
It really depends on if it is a hot or rainy day. But I will give a list of hot and cold drink I like, and you can choose for your current mood.
- Yen we Jan Tea – sort of Chinese tea, you get like an extra if u sit in a restaurant. It is a good mix of local leaves. If you like your tea with milk, you need to find a dedicated Burmese café in order to have it, because it is usually not served in a restaurant.
- Coconut juice – My favourite non-alcoholic drink in the streets of Myanmar. Super refreshing and delicious. Gives you the energy to follow the rest of your plan for the day.
- Myanmar Beer-You can find the local Myanmar beer, but there is also “Tiger”, “ABC Stout” and “Mandalay” beer. In my opinion, all of them are great. But give them at least a single try to choose which you like the best.
